Tips on Styling Shelves

When styling shelves, one aspect to keep in mind is to not clutter the shelves with too many objects. Use a variety such as books, vases, signs, pictures, plants, baskets or candles.  Do not put too many items of the same height next to one another, because you want to have a layered look.  If you’re styling shelves for decor/design purposes only, spread items out.  Just because you have room, does not mean you should fill every space.

Sometimes we want to run out and buy new items when we install new shelves, but before you do that, take a look around your home, because you are sure to find items that you can already use.  Family photos, heirlooms and antique pieces make great styling items and if you want to add a little texture, you can add varying types of vases.   There are no hard and fast rules on what to add, as long as it suits your style.

Styling your shelves in a monochromatic design is a beautiful and soft look that will not go out of style.  Also, when adding a touch of foliage, whether real or faux, this adds texture and warmth.

If you are styling shelves for functionality, for instance in a kitchen that has open shelving, make sure you put the items on the top that you will not use everyday.  The top shelf can be more of a decor shelf whereas your other shelves need to be functional if you are adding items such as bowls or glasses.  Try not to put dust collectors on your shelf if possible.  Candles are great, because they won’t become dust collectors and they add ambiance to your space when used.

Whatever you do, make it your own.
